Household Chemical CleanOut

NIRW organises Household Chemical CleanOut events each year for residents in the New England North West NSW region, to safely dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals for free. These events are held annually across many locations and are advertised in advance.

The safe way to dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals is at a free Chemical CleanOut event.

⚠️ CHEMICAL CLEANOUT EVENT UPDATE ⚠️
We regret to inform you that all upcoming Chemical CleanOut events in our region have been cancelled due to a fire at the Cleanaway processing facility.
We are working to resume services as soon as possible.
In the meantime, please store your household chemicals safely
and do not dispose of them in general waste or recycling.
For updates, follow us on Facebook.

Storing and transporting unwanted chemicals

Handle and transport chemicals carefully:

  • Never mix chemicals as this may produce dangerous reactions.
  • Wherever possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers.
  • Ensure containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed. If you do not know the contents, label the container ‘unknown chemical’.
  • Liquid can leak during transport: wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper, place in sturdy plastic bags and then in plastic buckets or trays.
  • Keep household chemicals away from passengers, for example, by placing them in the boot of your car.

This project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy initiative, funded from the waste levy.
